Rural Homes
The Need for Rural Affordable Housing
High house prices in rural areas cause problems for local people on low and average
incomes. Young people are leaving villages to find homes they can afford meaning local
services and facilities, such as schools and shops, are under threat.
Providing good quality affordable housing in rural areas is a key priority in York, North
Yorkshire & East Riding. This is a complex and often lengthy process and we have a
team of Rural Housing Enablers (RHEs) to provide support and expertise for rural
communities and partners. RHEs work to enable local people/workers on modest
incomes to stay or return to their village. Developments of this kind can help villages to
thrive.

Richmondshire District Council have committed to supporting community venues to provide Warm and Welcome Spaces across the district.
As part of the Warm and Welcome Spaces project we have compiled a directory of Richmondshire Warm and Welcome Spaces. Not all the
venues have been funded by Richmondshire District Council, but they have agreed to be included on our map. Only venues that have given
permission are included on our map.

THE WAR MEMORIAL
HUNTON, NORTH YORKSHIRE
In this booklet, the biographical facts about each serviceman are given in chronological order of the dates of their deaths.
These facts are given in good faith and are taken from publicly available documents and from information provided by some of
the families of the men.
We hope that this booklet will stimulate further interest and lead to more information being discovered.
Please contact us if you feel that there are any significant omissions or errors which need to be corrected or if you can provide
any additional information.
Hunton’s War Memorial stands on a small, roadside green near the quoits pitch between the Countryman’s Inn and the Methodist
Chapel (Grid Ref. SE190925). It takes the form of a tapered stone obelisk about 2.5 metres high, set on a plinth and enclosed by a
low wall topped by railings. The memorial shows the symbol of a laurel leaf, a traditional form of commemoration, and inscriptions
in raised letters.
Welcome to Hunton
A small rural village in lower Wensleydale equidistant
from the market towns of Bedale, Leyburn and
Richmond.
The village has a strong community who work together
to create a thriving social scene and who enhance and
maintain the village landscape, there is a Community
Pub, Village Hall and Chapel with a variety of groups
who hold weekly, monthly and annual events.
Hunton Quoits Club
The game of quoits has been around for hundreds of years but slowly declined in popularity during the late 19th/early 20th
centuries. In 1978 however, the Zetland Quoits League was formed and in 1979 the Lower Dales Quoits League.
A group of Huntonites decided to form a quoits team and join the newly established
leagues. Interest in the game was significant with the Zetland league having approximately
24 teams from North Yorkshire and County Durham. The Lower Dales League started with
approximately 16 teams and was more local to Hunton. Matches were played on Monday
(Zetland) and Wednesday (Lower Dales) evenings during the Summer.
The game is played on a pitch comprising two clay “pits” 11 yards apart. In the middle of
the pit is a pin and the basic object of the game is to score points by getting your quoit
nearest to the pin. Additional points are scored for getting your quoit over the pin. The first
player to reach 21 points wins the game. The quoits themselves are made of malleable
steel and weigh just over 5lbs each.
Hunton Quoits Club competed in both leagues for many years but following a slow decline
in venues and teams and the need to travel significant distances to away matches this led
the Club to reluctantly withdraw from the Zetland League and it now plays only in the
Lower Dales League and is currently in Division 2 of the league having been relegated this
season. We have 15 players and are proud that all our players either live in Hunton or have
a very close connection to the Village. 4 of our current players have racked up over 150
years between them playing for the Club which is a remarkable achievement. Over the last
couple of years we have welcomed a number of new players and we are always delighted
to welcome men and women interested in playing the game. The season runs from late
April through to early August and we can be seen playing on The Green next to the War
Memorial on Wednesday evenings from about 7.00 pm until 9.00 pm. If you fancy learning
more about this fascinating and historic game you will be made most welcome and any
Club Member will be delighted to show you how the game is played. Because we change Club Officials each year it is best to either
ask at the Pub for a contact or come along on Wednesday nights during the season.
